A question arises in the mind of people “does cramming actually work before an exam?” The simple answer should be in the mind of the person is: No. The biggest problem with cramming is that their Short-Term Memory is overloaded with too much information. 

Despite all the facts, there are many of the people that still rely on cramming. Let’s take a look at why this is and how to avoid cramming for their next exam. Cramming makes a person looks stressed and fatigue. If a person is really learning something that is based on regular repetition to commit the material to their long-term memory so that they can recall it easily when they need it. After looking at the same education material over and over again for a long time then everything appears to be familiar. Unfortunately, the brain of the person interprets that as “having learned” the information. The problem is that when the person needs to access those facts again during their test this often fails. A second huge disadvantage of cramming is that a person is most likely to spend more time without a break on the specific subject than is healthy. A person may sacrifice their sleep which is one of the worst things that a person can do before an exam.

 The third problem that comes with cramming is that it puts the person’s mind and body that is under a lot of stress. This will add to the nervous feeling that the person has anyway before the exam together with the certainty that they did not learn enough for the test that they have to give. So, one should replace cramming with the best exam advice that is being well prepared, relaxed and well-rested with fatigue, uncertainty, and stress.

It doesn’t matter if the person is in high school or college. If they are a student then chances are pretty good that they have waited until the last minute to study for the test. But does even cramming for a test really do any good for the person? Whether the persons study abroad or do MBBS in Russia, cramming should not be the way of learning.

It depends on what kind of learner the student is and how are they using their “cram time”? It also depends on what the test is covering in its syllabus. If it’s going to be straight up multiple-choice and is based only on memorization then cramming can work. Good luck if the person is being asked to apply for that information.

The cramming for a test consists of hunkering down at the various library and surrounding themselves with piles of their textbooks and research articles. What actually takes place at that table of the person though? Well, a person should browse Facebook newsfeed, scroll through the Twitter feed, and update their Google Calendar. It may sound familiar to some of the people. Then, after sitting there for an hour or so, it might be productive for a person for about 30 minutes and after that, the person can take a break of their type. Then they can read another chapter and they would like to have some sort of a snack.

This is not a productive way that a person should do to study.

Be aware of how you are able to learn. Does the person is able to recall information better if they have read it, heard it, or experienced it? One should take that into the consideration when they are deciding how, where, or when to study.

Obviously, when they are trying to learn something, the more time the people spend with the content the better recall they will have. It also usually works the best if they spread that the time out over multiple days. 30 minutes of studying for any subject each day by the person is much better than a 6-hour cram session on Sunday night.

One should schedule their study in advance that can be a daunting task. Instead, they might find themselves wondering ‘does cramming for exams work or not?’, as well as wondering what the effects of cramming that a person has to do. There are a few reasons that it doesn’t work, and why a person should try to plan their studying ahead of time instead of riding the exam cram tram all the way to breakdown town.

1. One will get more bang for their buck

Spreading out the time of study is more effective than doing it all in one go. Luckily, this doesn’t mean that a person has to spend more time studying, they just need to re-order their study time across a number of days or weeks. Phew! 

A person might find that studying in shorter bursts, like the 25-minute blocks will be recommended by the Pomodoro technique, works best for the person, or they might find that they prefer studying for roughly an hour before they take a break. Whatever a person ends up doing they should not try to study for longer than an hour at a time without even taking a break!

2. It’ll help a person to chill

If a person put off studying until the last minute can stress the person out. Knowing what the person needs to learn a lot of information in order to perform on their test that can be more overwhelming. And when the person is overwhelmed, the person tends to feel more stressed and anxious. The more and well prepared the person is, the less they will have to stress. While the person prepares in advance that does mean a bit more work, it will pay off the person in the long run when they are not reduced to staying up late in the night before an exam, trying to memorize the things that they have learned in the past year. 

3. Mind blanks will be long forgotten by the person

Exams can freak the person out. When the person is stressed it’s harder to remember things. The learning by taking the practice tests or by talking about what they have learned with a friend or family member helps to protect their memory from the negative effects of stress. This means the person is more likely to remember what they have learned, and also get a better mark on that exam.

4. A person should sleep more

The person called to be called as all-nighters for a reason, and that’s because they end up staying up from the dusk ‘till dawn. While it may seem that it is like a good idea to skimp out on sleep for a few extra hours of study, research shows this won’t do them any favors. The person’s concentration in the exam room will be patchy, meaning if they are less likely to ace that test.

5. A person can say adios to feeling guilty

If a person is planning out their study session that means they can schedule in the specific times for relaxation and for the fun activities. So, instead of feeling guilty for watching their fav show or catching up with their batchmates, they will know it’s all part of the master plan. In fact, these rewards can help the person to stay motivated throughout their study session.
